In general terms, all collaborative footwear projects are about putting the collaborative partner’s distinct, individualistic stamp on a familiar offering. It’s not uncommon for this visual signature to be taken rather literally, with a lot of prominent co-branding and the like. What is very rare is the high concept approach taken by menswear designer Feng Chen Wang, as she reimagines the mid-top version of a perennial Converse favorite, the Jack Purcell.
Wang’s take on the most famous badminton shoe in history is inimitably personal, in more ways than one. In crafting a design that incorporates her Chinese heritage, Wang brings her signature, self-described authentic, emotional and multidimensional aesthetic to life. The deconstruction and innovative reconstruction methods so present in Wang’s work, forge a reshaped Jack Purcell silhouette featuring layered, leather uppers comprised of her name’s Mandarin characters as the design’s centerpiece.
