Retro Futurism is a visual style that represents a kind of strained interplay between past, present and future. 60’s and 70’s sci-fi that imagined sleeker and sleeker designs for things like public phones, but couldn’t have guessed that the future would eventually bring the smartphone with it, modern designs that are directly influenced by the predictive visions of previous eras, and the reimagination of old-fashioned designs with up to date tech, all fall under the retro futurism banner. 

ASICS applies the era bridging, retro futurist vision to the GEL-Kayano 14 runner. The UB1-S variant alters the pure performance DNA and late 2000’s technical design of the original silhouette by changing up the material composition and cosmetic details. 

The standard breathable mesh uppers is outfitted with synthetic leather overlays, which add a glossy sheen, reminiscent of streamlined, speculative technological designs, while an elongated tongue pull tab is a purely aesthetic embellishment that emphasizes the sneaker’s expanded, contemporary role as a bedrock of fashion.
