The original Air Rift was inspired by Kenya’s barefoot running legacy, and the open construction, split-toe design proved to be not just a forerunner of the minimalist running movement to follow during the next decade, but a cult fashion favorite as well. 

Aqua Gear marked Nike’s entry into the arenas of water based action sports like, surfing, sailing and windsurfing, as well as casual beachwear, with an array of vibrant colors and modern performance fabrics. 

Nike’s Aqua Rift is the union of these two experimentally minded projects. The open, split-toe look of the Air Rift is rendered in the aquatic performance materials of the Aqua Gear range, and augmented with an accentuated midsole, inspired by traditional Japanese geta sandals.
