Tinker Hatfield’s groundbreaking design took inspiration from the foot hugging simplicity of a slalom ski, and applied it to a lightweight running shoe, named for the traditional Mexican sandal style.
The pared down design, featuring neoprene bootie, exoskeletal support and leather uppers, made a bold statement in an era of high-tech maximalism, and the Huarache became a hit with competitive runners and fashion forward celebrities alike. Before long, the Huarache was one of the decade’s most beloved styles.
