When optical glass pioneer Bausch & Lomb was approached to help military pilots combat glare in the sky, the results were a pair of plastic frames with green lenses that cut down on ultra-violet and infra-red rays of light. Seeing the widespread potential for their creation, not only did this lead to the brand’s now famous name, Ray-Ban quickly updated it’s creation for the masses, swapping out the plastic for a metal frame in 1937. With that, the Aviator was born and an 88 year history of classic models like the Wayfarer and Clubmaster were soon to follow.
