The brainchild of designer Hardy Blechman, Maharishi has produced its award-winning pacifist military designs since 1994.  The roots of Maharishi, and offshoot label MHI, lay in Blechman’s former career in the military surplus clothing trade, which inspired Blechman to take the concept of repurposing to a new level.

Originally a stand alone tailor shop, trade boomed when the U.S. Navy accepted the invitation to advise in the Vietnam War and the Maharishi Fine Tailor Company emerged, expanding throughout the region into Bhutan, Tibet and China. Having liberated large stocks of U.S. fabric, materials, patches and insignia in Vietnam, abandoned at the end of the war, the tailor shop branches in Tibet and China produced monk’s robes for the Buddhists and Shaolin.
