If you’re not paying attention, you might be tempted to think of duet as yet another entry in the mash-up culture that produces ersatz, hybridized versions of original influences, but a duet is very different from a mash up.

In a duet, each component performance, complete with all of its distinctly individual characteristics is equally important in comprising the finished piece, because each individual component is formed separately, solo, if you will, rather than simultaneously.
