Employing a revolutionary new mentality toward sustainability, Nike is using a “Life on Mars” approach in constructing its newest silhouettes. Linked through the limitations of creating only with what is available at hand, these shoes were made from materials that would have otherwise been discarded— in other words, trash.

Each of the four silhouettes in the “Space Hippie” collection begins with a “Space Waste Yarn” upper constructed from t-shirts, plastic bottles and textile scraps. Cushioning is provided from recycled Zoom X scraps and sits atop a special “Crater Foam” outsole which is made by blending several different Nike foams with Grind rubber.

In Bodega’s interview with the shoe’s designer, Noah Murphy-Reinhertz describes the Space Hippie 01 as “really lightweight, like a zero-gravity running shoe.”
